Hey guys, Mike here.
If you’re anything like me, your van is basically your office. I’ve got power tools, extension cords, fittings, paint sprayers — the works. Sometimes I leave stuff locked up on-site overnight too. One thing I never really thought about until my buddy had his van broken into was this: if someone steals my gear, does my insurance cover it?
So I asked my broker what happens if my tools or materials go missing. Here’s what I learned.
General liability doesn’t cover your tools.
Liability covers people — not property. If your saws, drills, or compressors get stolen, a regular general liability policy won’t replace them. You need inland marine or “tools and equipment” coverage.
This type of policy protects your gear whether it’s in your van, at the shop, or at a job site. It usually covers theft, fire, or accidental damage. Basically, it follows your tools wherever you take them.Keep an inventory.
My broker told me to keep a simple list — even just photos on my phone — of everything I use on the job. That way, if something goes missing, there’s no question about what I owned or how much it’s worth.Materials in transit may need extra protection.
If I’m hauling drywall, fixtures, or AC units to a site and something happens in transit, that’s not automatically covered unless I have cargo or transit coverage.Locking up and documenting helps with claims.
Insurance companies look for proof that you take precautions — like using lock boxes, alarms, or marked storage. The safer you keep your gear, the easier the claim process goes.
After hearing all that, I added inland marine coverage right away. I’ve invested too much in my tools to risk losing them overnight. Now, I know if something happens, I’m covered and can get back to work fast.
If you rely on your tools like I do, make sure your policy has your back. Call The Sarrica Insurance Group at 516-277-0812 or fill out our quick online form here: Get a Quote.
